I would like to ask all of you out there, especially all the moms to help me get the word out about UV light burns. My dear friend Kellie has gone through, extensive pain and suffering over the last 19 months. All from a broken type "R" metal halide light bulb in a school gym. She is a school teacher and was attending an in-service training session. 70 teachers were injured in the gymnasium where they were exposed to UV radiation. In five and half hours these teachers received a 24 hour dose of UV radiation every 8 minutes. That is equal to a little over 41 days worth of UV exposure!
What would have happened if these were children in there for gym class or think about all the kids that eat lunch there? What would have been the extent of their problems - suffering in pain at such a young age.
What they have learned is that this is not an isoloated incident. These lights continue to fail. We are asking for your support, especially in Oregon to request a recall of this dangerous product and imediate removal of these lights from all Oregon schools.
What can you do?- Call your childrens' schools and ask what bulbs are used in gyms and auditoriums
- Urge your school district to remove "R" metal halide bulbs and replace the bulbs with a different type that does not cause burns
- Call your legislator to ask that manufacturers be held accountable for products that pose a public danger.
- Be aware of symptoms such as swollen eyes, skin irritation and other sunburn like irritations. If these occur afer being in an indoor setting, notify the property manager, your doctor and if you are in Oregon contact OSHA
